Hut tour through the mountains and forests of the Vindelfjällen

This snowshoe tour in Lapland takes you to untouched mountains in one of Europe’s most beautiful nature reserves. We enter an indescribable world of snow and ice, which radiates an unbelievable calm, truly soothing for the soul. The silence and the light of winter will draw you in and never leave you. Anyone who has experienced it will always return.

Description

We follow the course of the Vindel River. The river has been shaping this region for thousands of years and gave the nature reserve its name. It is Europe’s largest nature reserve and covers an area of over 5,500 km².

You will experience an extremely diverse landscape: untouched birch forest, the Hochfjäll above the tree line, rugged mountain peaks, torrential rapids and vast lakes and swamps. With a bit of luck, we will be able to observe rare animals, which are no longer present in many parts of Europe. Brown bears, lynx and wolverines call this place home. Wolves also pass through the area. The endangered Arctic fox as well as a number of species of birds of prey, such as golden eagles and osprey can also be seen here.

Course

Following your arrival on Sunday and the first night in the arctic-mountain-team guest house, on Monday morning we leave early for the trekking area. The start and end point of the tour is the small village of Ammarnäs, a typical Sami village in the middle of the mountains.

For the next 5 or 12 days, we enter the silence of the white wilderness. Along the Trog Valley of the Vindel River to the north. The stages are 10 to 16 km long and are measured so that we can reach our daily destinations without being rushed. Sufficient time for resting, relaxing and photographing are planned along the route.

The trail mostly passes through slightly hilly terrain. We spend the night in beautifully situated, simple mountain huts. Some are equipped with wood-fired saunas in which we spend pleasant sauna evenings. We transport the luggage in our pulkas, the typical Scandinavian sledge. Only our personal clothing is carried in light backpacks. Hiking in snowshoes is easy to learn. After a brief instruction, we start on a snowshoe tour, which is an unforgettable adventure.

On the 5th day of the tour (or 12th day of the tour) we once again reach Ammarnäs. We take the minibus back to Älvsbyn. The tour ends with a joint dinner.

Requirements

Apart from being in good condition, no prior knowledge is necessary. Snowshoe trekking is easy and can be learned by everyone.

You can find a list of personal items in our Travel Info (PDF-File).

As we are away for several days, we naturally expect every participant to help with the daily chores, such as cooking, making a fire and chopping wood. We place a great emphasis on team work.
